St. Inigoes MD

Relocating to St. Inigoes

St. Inigoes holds a significant historical legacy tracing back to the early days of America, being among the pioneering colonial settlements in Maryland. This quaint town stands as a testament to the rich history of the region, recognized as an integral part of the fourth colonial settlement established in the United States.

History of St. Inigoes

St. Inigoes, Maryland, holds significant historical importance as part of the first colonial settlement in Maryland, alongside neighboring St. Mary’s City. Jesuit priests, arriving with the initial Maryland settlers, established their first farm and mission in St. Inigoes, supported by 20 indentured servants. They developed a tobacco plantation to sustain the mission, with remnants of their activities unearthed in archaeological excavations at Priest’s Point.

Historians believe that Governor Leonard Calvert, Maryland’s first colonial governor, is buried somewhere in St. Inigoes, likely on Webster Field, now a U.S. Naval Aircraft facility. Despite numerous archaeological digs, his grave remains undiscovered. Calvert’s sudden death, amidst religious conflict, prompted legislation promoting religious tolerance, reinforcing the colony’s commitment to peace.

St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church in St. Inigoes is the oldest continuously operating U.S. Catholic parish in English-speaking North America. Established in 1637, the church played a pivotal role in promoting religious tolerance, reflecting the Calverts’ mandate. Father James Walton initiated the construction of a new church in 1784, with Father John Carroll laying the cornerstone in 1785. The church, now a designated historic site, includes a graveyard dating back to 1641 and is a testament to St. Inigoes’ rich cultural heritage.

Ruins of Fort St. Inigoes

A portion of Western St. Inigoes was the site of the St. Inigoes Fort. This spot overlooked the St. Mary’s River during the time of colonial St. Mary’s City. This spot was used for strategic protection for defending the water access point to the city which at the time was under the threat of anti-Catholic militias. It was also being protected from Virginia Colony militias opposed to the colonization of Maryland.

The land that the Fort sat on saw a lot of shore erosion and as such the area collapsed in the St. Mary’s River. The site of the ruins now stands underwater just offshore.

A small but popular public park used for its recreational use and public boat launch. Fishing and crabbing are allowed in designated areas as well. It is also a popular place for barbeques and picnics.
