Lexington Park is not really its own city but in a census-designated place in St. Mary’s County in southern Maryland. It’s home to about 12,000 residents in the entire area is spread out along the Patuxent River completely surrounding the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. It’s bordered by California, Great Mills, Park Hill, the river, and Lusby Maryland, right across Thomas Johnson Bridge.
Lexington Park was created in 1943 with the establishment of the Patuxent Naval Air Station during World War II and was named for the recently sunk USS Lexington aircraft carrier. The area was formally called Jarboesville and was the location for many astronaut training programs for famous astronauts such as John Glenn and Alan Shepherd. The Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge was created in 1977 spanning the Patuxent River linking the area to Calvert County. Lexington Park has been known as one of the nation’s fastest-growing “micropolitan” areas expanding my nearly 15% since the year 2000. This is primarily due to military growth. Southern Maryland is the fastest growing area in the state and a very desirable bedroom community for folks that work in Washington DC, but unlike neighboring Charles County and Calvert County, many residents in St. Mary’s County both live and work in the area. The tungsten Naval Air Station employs about 20,000 people, which drives about 75% of the area’s economy.
Lexington Park is part of the St. Mary’s County school system and includes several schools spread out throughout southern Maryland including Town Creek elementary, Green View Knolls elementary, Lexington Park elementary, George Washington Carver elementary, Esperanza middle school, Spring Ridge middle school, and Great Mills High school. Several private schools and charter schools are also close by in neighboring Great Mills.
For higher education, St. Mary’s College of Maryland is located just 7 miles south of Lexington Park and one of only two public honors colleges in the nation. The College of Southern Maryland, a community college and Merchant Marine Academy are also located within about 5 to 10 minutes from Lexington Park.

There is many local seafood restaurants that have the best seafood I’ve ever tried(and I’ve been to a lot of places). There is always events going on throughout the year that are hosted by many places such as: the Hollywood Fire Department, St. Mary’s college, and the Calvert Marine Museum across the bridge.
