More about La Plata Maryland

History

Welcome to La Plata Maryland this beautiful little town is located between the Potomac River and the Patuxent River just south of Waldorf. Highway 301 runs north and south directly through the center of town is home to the Charles County Parks Department. La Plata is home to about 10,000 residents and is the county seat of Charles County. It was named by colonial Samuel Chapman, whose family owned 6000 acres in Charles County in the late 1800s. It was incorporated in 1888 and the La Plata courthouse was built as well as several other historical buildings such as the historic Christ Episcopal Church in Port Tobacco, which dates back to 1683 and was reconstructed in 1884 and then once again dismantled and its stones were transported by oxen and cart to its current location in La Plata. In 1940, when the Potomac River bridge, now called the Gov. Harry W Nice Memorial Bridge, provided a link to King George Virginia and brought long-distance East Coast traffic through the town as an alternative to US one and later Interstate 95.

This largely residential community has been rated as #1 of the best places to live in the county. It has great schools, diversity, and most residents own their own homes. It has a median home value of about $330,000 with a median rent of about $1200. It has a unique and attractive downtown core, a small arts and culture ambiance, and of course, its historical interest makes it a great place to explore as well as call home.

“The small town vibe of La Plata is very cozy. I love going on drives to look at all the old houses and their architecture. La Plata being right off of 301 is very helpful too. As a resident, I have easy access to any restaurant you could think of and big stores like Target and Walmart as well as small thrift stores like Hooks and Hangers. What to know about La Plata Maryland

If you’re considering a move to Maryland or just want to know a little bit more about the area,
La Plata is home to blue crabs. It’s one of the few places diners can find blue crabs on the menu at most restaurants.
The waters around the plat to our full of these delicious crustaceans known for their sweet and succulent meat. This Maryland delicacy and tradition
are known for their high quality and great taste. You’ll find them in many of the restaurants around serve steamed, deep-fried, and when you can catch
the softshell crab, you can eat the whole thing in a delicious sandwich or burger. Crab season is typically April through October and a couple of the key dining spots are
Capt. Billy’s Seafood Restaurant,

Like we mentioned, La Plata is also home to multiple historical attractions with over 350 years of farming, fires, wars, and tornadoes… But don’t let that scare you;
it just means our area is rich in history and when you have a spare moment, you’ll have to check out the Charles County historic sites such as
St. igneous Church built in 1798, one of the oldest continually operating Catholic churches in the nation. St. Thomas Manor, Thomas Stone Historic Site,
and the Samuel Mudd House Museum, all in the 1700s are found around La Plata Maryland.

Around the 1950s, Charles County was known for its gambling. Along Route 301 from Waldorf to the Potomac River bridge was known as
“Little Vegas” or “Slot Machine Alley”. It even outpaced slot revenues in Las Vegas at the time. Fancy restaurants, entertainment, and amazing gambling establishments
were all up and down Highway 301 with blues singers like Fats Domino and the latest in jazz singers that Waldorf clubs. But, by 1968, the gambling era was over.
Folks felt that there was a dependency on the economy for slot machine gambling and because it was in highly regulated, quickly fizzled out.

There are over 660 businesses in little old La Plata. We have multiple dining options, retail shops, small businesses, and Parks and Recreation.
Surrounding rural Charles County provides outdoor recreation and activities for all locals and visitors alike. Grab your bike and head out on the
Indian Head Rail Trail,
a beautifully paved trail that followed a previous railroad line extending over 13 miles starting at the Naval Station and ending at Theodore Green Boulevard west of 301.

Live and Work

While this is primarily a residential community some residents work for the Charles County government and others commute to Washington DC or nearby Waldorf in Baltimore. The Andrews Air Force Base and Naval Air Station Patuxent River are also close by and feature a lot of La Plata residents. Recent development and reconstruction of office buildings and the downtown area has shown more growth over the last couple of years to this area.

La Plata is about an hour south of Washington DC or approximately 35 miles. Waldorf is only 15 minutes north along Highway 301. Port Tobacco is located just a couple of minutes south at the end of one of the arms of the Potomac River.
