Welcome to La Plata Maryland this beautiful little town is located between the Potomac River and the Patuxent River just south of Waldorf. Highway 301 runs north and south directly through the center of town is home to the Charles County Parks Department. La Plata is home to about 10,000 residents and is the county seat of Charles County. It was named by colonial Samuel Chapman, whose family owned 6000 acres in Charles County in the late 1800s. It was incorporated in 1888 and the La Plata courthouse was built as well as several other historical buildings such as the historic Christ Episcopal Church in Port Tobacco, which dates back to 1683 and was reconstructed in 1884 and then once again dismantled and its stones were transported by oxen and cart to its current location in La Plata. In 1940, when the Potomac River bridge, now called the Gov. Harry W Nice Memorial Bridge, provided a link to King George Virginia and brought long-distance East Coast traffic through the town as an alternative to US one and later Interstate 95.
This largely residential community has been rated as #1 of the best places to live in the county. It has great schools, diversity, and most residents own their own homes. It has a median home value of about $330,000 with a median rent of about $1200. It has a unique and attractive downtown core, a small arts and culture ambiance, and of course, its historical interest makes it a great place to explore as well as call home.

Around the 1950s, Charles County was known for its gambling. Along Route 301 from Waldorf to the Potomac River bridge was known as
“Little Vegas” or “Slot Machine Alley”. It even outpaced slot revenues in Las Vegas at the time. Fancy restaurants, entertainment, and amazing gambling establishments
were all up and down Highway 301 with blues singers like Fats Domino and the latest in jazz singers that Waldorf clubs. But, by 1968, the gambling era was over.
Folks felt that there was a dependency on the economy for slot machine gambling and because it was in highly regulated, quickly fizzled out.
