History of Chaptico Maryland

The word Chaptico is believed to be Algonquian for “big broad river it is.” It is believed to be derived from the Chaptico Tribe of natives that lived in the area. The Chaptico Tribe lived in this area for thousands of years before the arrival of Captain John Smith in 1608. The area was later settled by the English in the 1600’s. Chaptico was once the second largest port in Maryland and the first incorporated town in St. Mary’s County. Chaptico was a thriving port town with warehouses, taverns, and stores lining the riverfront. The town was eventually surpassed by nearby Leonardtown as the county seat in 1708. Today, Chaptico is a small rural community that retains much of its historic charm.
